New name to be unveiled tonight

10:48 AM Jan. 19, 2004

And the new name is…

Sorry, but you’ll have to come to the NEOpreneur Exchange networking party Thursday night at the Pickwick & Frolic if you want to learn the name of the new entrepreneurial assistance organization taking shape to serve the region.

The new organization is being created through the merger of Enterprise Development Inc. and NEOpreneur Inc. Its new board will meet officially for the first time on Wednesday, Jan. 21, and then Ray Leach, chief executive of the new organization, plans to unveil the new name at the networking event, which is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. More information on the event and online registration is available here.

Mr. Leach said he would also detail the mission and programs of the new organization. The merger was announced in November and Mr. Leach was named to lead the organization last month.

Also speaking at the networking event will be Brad Whitehead of the Cleveland Foundation, who will detail efforts by area foundations to stimulate economic development in the region; Jamie Ireland of Early Stage Partners; and OfficeMax co-founder Michael Feuer, who will detail his plans for a new venture fund, called Max-Ventures, that will target specialty retail investment opportunities.

The NEOpreneur party, which costs $40 to attend, will also feature structured networking opportunities.

Interesting little poll on the Crainstech website today produced the following results (can't tell how many folks replied so far)... funny to see a write in for "the freedom to self organize", which Tribe enables:

What is Cleveland's tech community in need of most?

    38.67% A leader
    14.67% More entrepreneurs
13.33% A marketing strategy about Cleveland companies
12.00% A government that supports entrepreneurs
    12.00% Other
9.33% An organization to help entrepreneurs

    Other (write-ins)
    money
    more management talent
    the freedom to self organize
    patient, smart money
    investments
    all of the above
    A home run

The envelope, please. (Drum roll.) The name of the entrepreneur support group being formed in Northeast Ohio is (cymbal crash) - JumpStart Inc.

JumpStart will try to bridge the financing and expertise gaps among the region's brightest start-up companies, often providing them with their first money.

Ray Leach has been appointed founding chief executive of the recent combination of Enterprise Development Inc., a nonprofit subsidiary of Case Western Reserve University; NEOpreneur Inc., part of local technology and business coalition NorTech; and NEOpreneur Exchange, a networking event that sprang from local entrepreneurs' need for a place to fit in.
